Practical guide
Which document properties this viewer reads
The viewer reads the title, author, subject, keywords, creation and modification dates, creating application, and PDF producer from the document information fields. It displays these values in your browser without editing the file.
An empty field means there is no value to display in the properties this tool reads. It does not inspect every XMP record, annotation, or attachment. Author names and dates are editable metadata, not proof of authorship or a verified document history.
- Input
- One PDF
- Output
- View only (file unchanged)
- Processing
- Current browser memory
Good use cases
- ✓Checking whether the author field contains a personal name
- ✓Reading the recorded PDF producer
- ✓Comparing displayed properties before and after cleanup
Checks while inspecting
- •Review author, title, and keywords for information you do not want to share
- •Compare time zones if another viewer shows a different date
- •Do not treat empty fields as proof that the document contains no personal information
📝How to Use
- Drag and drop the PDF file you want to inspect into the upload zone or click to select.
- The document properties are read immediately after the file is loaded.
- Review the title, author, dates, producer, and other recorded information.
- Use the "Change File" button to inspect another document.
⚠️Caveats
- This viewer reads the standard document information fields. It does not inspect all XMP records, annotations, attachments or embedded image metadata.
- An empty field means no value was returned for that field, not that the entire document is free of identifying information. Dates and author names are editable and do not prove authenticity.
- Inspection runs locally. This tool does not support opening encrypted PDFs; use an authorized unencrypted copy.
❓Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q.What information is stored in PDF metadata?
PDF files can carry a document information record with the title, author, subject, keywords, creation and modification dates, the application used, and the library or driver that produced the file. Cameras, scanners, and word processors often write this data automatically when the PDF is first created.
Q.Is my document uploaded anywhere while I inspect it?
No. The file is read with the browser's own file API and parsed in your browser memory. The inspection result you see is computed locally, and the document never leaves your device.
Q.Why would I check metadata before sharing a PDF?
Metadata can reveal details you did not intend to publish, such as your user name, the original file name, editing tools, or the document creation date. Checking it first lets you decide whether to clean the file with the Remove PDF Metadata tool before sending it out.
